To be a role model academic department nurturing creative minds for academic excellence in Assamese Language, Literature and Culture to develop a value based and sustainable society. Develop research culture; identify societal solutions for a sustainable society and share literary and language skills, knowledge and facilities.

MISSION:

To train the students through effective curriculum in the language skills, literary criticisms, comparative literature and application of language and literary principles with interdisciplinary approach, professional ethics, and leadership to meet the changing societal needs. To establish as a centre of excellence for research in the selected areas of Assamese Language and Literature to address the needs of the society and challenges of the 21st century.

Programme Outcome:

• Students will able to get the basic ideas of the periods of Assamese Literature, get knowledge about the authors and their literary works.
• The students will have concrete understanding about the origin and development of the Assamese language and linguistics.
• The students will get acquainted with the dimensions of literature and Literary Theory, different forms of literature like Poetry, Fiction, Short stories, Drama, Criticism, etc.
• The students will get an abstract idea about Assamese poetry from the beginning till date. They will also get to knowledge about the literary products of the eminent poets,and the poets ancient to modern.
• The students will able to know the different aspects of culture and traditions of Assam and will lead to them an idea about the cultures of Assam.
• The students will learn the use of comparative literature.
• The students will learn about the evolution and different stages of development of language like Assamese and Bangla from the National Aryan Language.
• The students will able to know the origin, changes and development of Assamese drama till date. They will able to learn about the different trends and features of drama of different ages by the well known dramatists of the specific period.
• The students will get the knowledge about Performing Arts through this programme.
• The students will get the knowledge about the culture and aspects of cultural tourism of Assam.

The syllabus prepared by the Dibrugarh University for the department of Assamese will benefit the students in the following ways:

• The students will be able to study about the Assamese language, literature and culture at the University level.
• The students will be able to study Mass Communication, Modern Indian Language, Cultural studies etc. at University level
• The students will become eligible for jobs in Print Media like Newspaper, Magazine, etc. and in Electronic Media like Television and Radio.
• Study of different Cultures and Traditions, literature, literary history will help the students in clearing various competitive exams.
• The students may establish themselves as a literary person by gaining the ability in creative writing and critical thinking.
• The students can engage themselves as translator and proof-readers in different institutions.
• The students will be eligible to get a job in the department of Archaeology.
• They can develop the human resource of the nation as a teacher. They can engage themselves in the Tourism Department as a guide.

04	ASMM-C-4 Poetics	Students will be able to understand the basic theory of Indian Aesthetics and its history. The course provides the knowledge of Indian criticism and about the Indian literary critic and their opinion.
05	ASMM-C-5 Literary criticism	The course introduce to the students about the definition and the various part of literature. Students are able to know the theory of all branches of literature. It is about the critic studies of poem, drama, novel and short stories of Assamese literature.
06	ASMM-C-6 Selections from Assamese poetry	Students will be able to understand the history of Assamese poetry and trends. Learn the characteristics and diversity of Assamese poem and poet of Assamese literature.
07	ASMM-C-7 Studies on the Culture of Assam	The course provides the basic concept of culture and its components. Student can easily understand the culture of all tribes of north east as well as the life style, food habit, rituals of north-east culture.
08	ASMM-C-8 Theory and practice of Comparative Literature.	After completion of the course students will be able to understand the concept and definition of comparative literature. Its helps to understand the value of translation and the translated literature to Assamese.
09	ASMM-C-9 Indo-Aryan Languages and Assamese	The course helps the students to create the knowledge of Indo-Aryan Language and Literature. Students can understand the grammatical trends of Sanskrit,Pali-Prakrit-Apabhransha and Assamese.
10	ASMM-C-10 Selection from Assamese Prose	Introduce to the history and characteristics of Assamese prose. Students can understand the grorious history of Assamese prose by reading selected part of Assamese prose.
11	ASMM-C-11 Assamese Drama	The course provides concept about evaluation of Assamese Drama and theatre. Students are able to read and understand the old Assamese drama and new drama by reading various selected dramas of Assamese concept.
12	ASMM-C-12 Studies on Assamese Linguistics	The course helps students to understand Assamese Linguistics. Introduce the values of grammatical side and sentence structure of Assamese Language.

14	ASMM-C-14 Language and script of Assam	Student will be able to understand the history of Indo-Aryan Language with special reference to Assamese Language. The course helps the students to know the history of Assamese scripts, Script of other language and its trends.

 

Discipline Specific Elective (DSE)
01	DSE-1 Assamese Grammar, Lexicon and Idiomatic Usages	Basically this paper clear Assamese grammatical concept and use of Assamese Idiomatic usages.  Students can learn the Assamese Lexicon by reading this paper.
02	DSE-2 Introduction to Indian Literature.	Student able to understand the concept the Indian literature by reading various types of literary work by various writers. Provides essentialness of reading comparative Indian Literature.
03	DSE-3 Introduction to World Literarure.	The course provide ideas about the world literature and the literary works all over the world. Students are able to understand the concept of world literature by reading selected text of literary work by various writers.
04	DSE-4(A) Special Author	There are five authors namely Bhupen Hazarika, Bhabendranath Saikia, Birendra kumar Bhattacharya, Mamoni Roisam Guswami ,Nirupoma Borgohain in the course and student can select any one.Students can understand specially one prominent author of Assam. They can widely know about the life and literary work of the author by reading the course.
	DSE-4(B) Project	The course is about the research topic, research methodology, and field study of difference project work. In this course students can learn how to doing a research work. Research project course help students to future life in research

 

 

Ability Enhancement Compulsory Course (AECC)
01	AECC: Communicative Assamese.	This is a common course for all of Arts, Science and Commerce stream. This course helps the students to develop the communication skill of Assamese language.

 

 

 

 

Faculty Members past and present:

            The faculty members of the Department as a separate identity started functioning from the very beginning of the establishment of the college in 1987. The founder teachers of the department were –

• Modernizing the Syllabus: The department plans to revise and modernize its curriculum to include contemporary topics such as modern Assamese literature, media studies, and translation practices. This will ensure that students are well-versed in current trends and developments in the field, enabling them to engage critically with both classic and modern texts.
• Introduction of New Courses: To broaden the scope of education, the department will introduce elective courses on subjects like creative writing, digital storytelling, and Assamese journalism. These courses will not only enhance students’ linguistic skills but also prepare them for various professional roles in media, education, and cultural organizations.
• Skill Development Workshops: Regular workshops on skills such as public speaking, critical thinking, and creative writing will be organized. These workshops will help students develop essential skills for academic success and professional growth, making them more competitive in the job market.

• Establishment of a Research Center: The department plans to create a Research Center for Assamese Studies, focusing on various aspects of language, literature, and culture.
