Background:
Since the establishment in 1987, Golaghat Purbanchalik Ccollege as well as the Department of Assamese has been working for the promotion and development of higher education among the students coming from various places of Assam. The College received approval of Dibrugarh University in April, 2014 to open major subject in Assamese. Since then the students of this subject have benefited greatly from studying the subject in this college.
The students passing B.A. in Assamese from the college have achieved excellence in the field of Assamese Language and Literature. The department continues the intellectual and artistic activities for students development through various workshops, seminars, lectures etc. organized by the department keeping in view the intellectual and skill development of the students.The department started “Ramdhenu sahitya chora” in 2021,to bring awareness among the students towards the literary field. A Magazine of the department ‘ANUNAD’ (Hand writing) was started in the year 2019-2020. Assamese department has been continuing it’s efforts for artistic and intellectual development of the students by organizing various activities like Rabha Divas, Shilpi-Divas, World Literary Divas, Kobita Divas and so on., Seminars among the students in every year in addition to regular online classes during Lockdown period on the occasion of COVID-19 pandemic. A web conference was held in September, 2020. In addition to it another online lecture programme was conducted by the department in 2023.The department also publishes its departmental Wall magazine ‘KARSHAN’ on regular basis.
On the 7th September, 2019 the students of 3rd semester of the department were taken to an educational trip from the college campus to historical place Bhelought, Karbianglong.
Student profile-entry level, competency, socio-economic status, language proficiency etc:-
Students are admitted strictly on merit basis and as per Constitutional provision. The student who come largely from rural poor background and middle income group are considered for some fees exemption. Most students are proficient in their vernacular. Though they prefer vernacular (i.e Assamese) in learning process; they also have workable knowledge of English Language. Changes in the courses or programme made during the past two or three years and contribution of faculty to those changes is noticeable. The college is a constituent unit of the Dibrugarh University, Dibrugarh, Assam. Hence the college has not much role to play in such changes. In the recent past, the University syllabus were modified to make it more relevant and updated. Subject-matters like Journalism, Translation Proficiency, Applied Linguistics, Comparative Indian Literature, World Literature etc. were included in our major syllabus. The introduction of the CBCS system which is introduced from year 2019-2020, session has brought drastic change in our curriculum. Learning resources of the departmental-library, computer-lab and other resources. The department has it’s own small library. It has a good number of text and reference books. It has a computer with internet facility. Students and teachers normally consult the departmental library and the central library lends old and new books as they want. The college subscribes the journals like Indian Literature the Journal of Gariyosi (ISSN), Satsori (ISSN), Prantik (ISSN) etc.
Apart from these tutorial classes, home assignment, group discussions etc. are also arranged by the department. Sometimes teachers take remedial classes for the poor and mediocre students. Teachers of the Department are always available in academic and personal counselling, personal guidance to the students. They are very helpful to the students and encourage them for future prospects. Faculty members guide the students depending on their area of interest.

Develop research culture; identify societal solutions for a sustainable society and share literary and language skills, knowledge and facilities.
MISSION:
To train the students through effective curriculum in the language skills, literary criticisms, comparative literature and application of language and literary principles with interdisciplinary approach, professional ethics, and leadership to meet the changing societal needs. To establish as a centre of excellence for research in the selected areas of Assamese Language and Literature to address the needs of the society and challenges of the 21st century.
Programme Outcome:
- Students will able to get the basic ideas of the periods of Assamese Literature, get knowledge about the authors and their literary works.
- The students will have concrete understanding about the origin and development of the Assamese language and linguistics.
- The students will get acquainted with the dimensions of literature and Literary Theory, different forms of literature like Poetry, Fiction, Short stories, Drama, Criticism, etc.
- The students will get an abstract idea about Assamese poetry from the beginning till date. They will also get to knowledge about the literary products of the eminent poets,and the poets ancient to modern.
- The students will able to know the different aspects of culture and traditions of Assam and will lead to them an idea about the cultures of Assam.
- The students will learn the use of comparative literature.
- The students will learn about the evolution and different stages of development of language like Assamese and Bangla from the National Aryan Language.
- The students will able to know the origin, changes and development of Assamese drama till date. They will able to learn about the different trends and features of drama of different ages by the well known dramatists of the specific period.
- The students will get the knowledge about Performing Arts through this programme.
- The students will get the knowledge about the culture and aspects of cultural tourism of Assam.

- The students will be able to study about the Assamese language, literature and culture at the University level.
- The students will be able to study Mass Communication, Modern Indian Language, Cultural studies etc. at University level
- The students will become eligible for jobs in Print Media like Newspaper, Magazine, etc. and in Electronic Media like Television and Radio.
- Study of different Cultures and Traditions, literature, literary history will help the students in clearing various competitive exams.
- The students may establish themselves as a literary person by gaining the ability in creative writing and critical thinking.
- The students can engage themselves as translator and proof-readers in different institutions.
- The students will be eligible to get a job in the department of Archaeology.
