August 19, 2025The 133rd birth anniversary of Dr. S. R. Ranganathan, the father of library science in India, was celebrated as Librarian’s Day on 12th August 2025 by the Central Library of Golaghat Purbanchalik College in collaboration with the Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) and the Department of Assamese.
The event began with the lighting of lanterns and floral tributes at the portrait of Dr. Ranganathan by Dr. Haren Hazarika, Principal of the college and Chairperson of the event. This was followed by a welcome and introductory address by Shri Tridib Lochan Barooah, Convener of the Central Library, who spoke about the objective of the event and the significance of Librarian’s Day in preserving and promoting reading culture.
The program was graced by the presence of Dr. Malamoni Goswami, Vice-Principal, and Shri Pranjal Saikia, Coordinator of IQAC. Both dignitaries shared valuable insights on the theme: “The Relevance of Reading Books in the Age of New Advent and Extensive Use of Information and Communication Technology.” Their discussion emphasized the enduring value of reading in the digital age and the evolving role of libraries in education and society.
Shri Jagot Chandra Bora, Assistant Librarian, highlighted the various facilities available in the college library and how students and staff can effectively utilize these resources for academic growth and research.
The event concluded with a meaningful address by Dr. Haren Hazarika, who reiterated the importance of cultivating reading habits among students despite the rise of digital media. The program was attended by around fifty students, faculty members, and staff, reflecting a collective appreciation for libraries and their role in academic and personal development.
