Golaghat Purbanchalik College commemorated the birth centenary of Dr. Bhupen Hazarika, the legendary musician, lyricist, and cultural icon of Assam, with a vibrant day-long program on September 8, 2025.
The celebration was began with the ceremonial lighting of the lamp by the Principal, Dr. Haren Hazarika, in front of Dr. Bhupen Hazarika’s portrait. The event featured a painting competition on the theme “Mother’s Love” and a debate competition on Dr. Bhupen Hazarika’s literary contributions and his relevance in contemporary society. The competitions saw enthusiastic participation and were judged by Bondita Borthakur, Nitya Niranjan Bora, and Bishwajit D. Chetiya. The successful coordination of these events was made possible by Pranjal Saikia, Bijit Saikia, Swaraj Kr. Das, and Dondo Gohain.
The formal session was graced by distinguished guests including MLA of Dergaon Constituency, Shri Bhabendranath Bharali, and Dr. Anjan Saikia, Principal of Chinamara College. Principal Dr. Haren Hazarika delivered the welcome address.
The cultural segment featured performances of Bhupendra Sangeet and dance by Neha Kalita, Prajolika Phukan, and Priyanki Gogoi, capturing the essence of Dr. Hazarika’s musical legacy. During the award ceremony, the Bhogeswari Borah Memorial Award was conferred upon Nobokanta Kataki, student of Golaghat Purbanchalik College, who secured the highest marks in History in 2025. The award was presented by Dr. Anjan Saikia.
In the evening, a heartfelt tribute was paid through the lighting of 100 lamps at Hatiyekhowa Chariali, followed by a special musical program titled “Geete-Maate”, featuring popular singer Mon Madhujya. The event was supported by Dr. Haren Hazarika, Pankaj Gogoi, and notably organized with the contributions of Kamal Das.
The program concluded with a collective rendition of “Manuhe Manuhor Babe” performed by students, teachers, staff, and local residents — a fitting tribute to the values Dr. Hazarika stood for. The event was successfully conducted under the supervision of Assistant Professor Rinku Moni Gogoi, Department of Assamese.
